Foundation programme – Planning successful activities for people with dementia

Description

This workshop explores the importance of activity proposing that an activity-based model of care makes best use of activity of daily living as well as leisure activities as a means of increasing the physical and emotional well-being of people with dementia. A method for understanding the level of ability of individuals with dementia is introduced.

1 day – half-day – 4 day foundation programme


Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, participants will have met learning outcome 1.6 of the Knowledge Set for Dementia. Participants will have:

  • An understanding of the theory of activity
  • Identified practical ways to engage people with dementia in a range of appropriate activities
  • Explored a method to evaluate the impact of activities on an individual


Programme includes

  • Defining tasks, activities and occupation
  • Factors that affect engagement in activity
  • Introducing the PAL Instrument for occupational profiling
  • Facilitating activity


This programme is recognised by OCR, the NVQ Awarding body, as providing the underpinning knowledge and understanding for the Skills for Care National Occupational Standards for NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care:
