
Foundation programme – People with dementia and behaviour that is challenging

Description
This workshop introduces participants to a person-centred approach to understanding behaviours, viewed as challenging, as a means of communicating distress. Participants have opportunity to explore the reasons why behaviours occur and to discuss how to reduce these behaviours.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, participants will have met learning outcome 1.3 of the Knowledge Set for Dementia. Participants will have:
- Some understanding of the term ‘challenging behaviour’ and the related issues for people with dementia
- Acknowledged the impact another person’s interaction skills and environment can have on the behaviour of the person with dementia
- Identified practical ways you can translate the principles of responding to behaviours that are challenging

This programme is recognised by OCR, the NVQ Awarding body, as
providing the underpinning knowledge and understanding for the Skills
for Care National Occupational Standards for NVQ level 2 in Health and
